Most of the big chub are coming from the Medley stretch near Oxford at night. If you are fishing at Marlow the weir is as good a place to start so get a Thames weir permit and away you go. The problem you will find with the weirs is that in the summer all sorts of nutters frequent the area so fish with a friend if you can and the other problem i have found is that the fishing can be patchy in that one day you seem to do quite well and other days nothing. But the fun is that you don't know what you will catch as most species of fish like them. Some people i know love weir pool fishing so much they won't fish any where else!

Call in at Maidenhead Bait and Tackle in Cookham (near Cookham railway station) and ask them for a Cookham AC ticket to include TVAA. This will give you the Cookham stretch of the Thames plus 3 other stretches and a backwater and the Jubilee River from the Thames Valley Angling Assoc.

Also there is a free stretch in Marlow of Gossmore Road. You don;t need a weir permit for Marlow Weir as there is nowhere to fish from the bank except the Hotel which is very private. Email me and I'll send you more details.

Gimp - I thought that the Medley stretch was now no night fishing?

Sorry i forgot to mention to fish the weir at marlow you need to do it from a boat and take care as the current is unpredictable.

Mr Uncredible it is news to me that Medley is no longer allowing night fishing but not acomplete surprise. I have to admit it is sometime since i fished there as it was becoming a bit of a circus with all sorts of strange nocturnal goings on, with most of them being of the illegal variety.

I might be off the mark with the exact ocation - ie what stretch on what ticket - but last year there was a thread on here regarding ODAA banning night fishing due to a certain few members of the bivvy brigade I think. Stopped the likes of guys like Andy Nellist emptying the place.

I don't believe that Andy ever contravened the rules w.r.t. a bivy.

I would hope that what you meant Nigel was that because of the night fishing ban then Andy (who was fishing legally) could not take advantage of the hours of darkness?

I have never fished a river using a bivvie or for more than 16 consecutive hours.

The night fishing on Medley was banned because of a few badly behaved idiots who had no respect for the other. The ban meant that those of us who stuck to the rules lost some good fishing. For those that broke the rules it made no difference they kept on fishing !

The reason I preferred to fish that stretch at night was the boat traffic and people walking the banks which make daytime fishing a real pain on all but the channel.

Last season I did three short sessions on the stretch for 6 chub. The largest of 6-10 was caught at 2.30pm just 10 minutes into my first session.

Oh Gaawwwddddd!!! That's exactly what I meant Peter.

Andy forgive me if you or anyone reading got the wrong end of the stick on that one. You have spoken to me about that episode in the past so hope you know that I DO know that. I meant it literally as Peter has written.

Bloody words! Sometimes they don't look the same when ritten as you say them in your head do they? Feel a post or e-mail coming on from Swordsy or Jason now :O)

I'm going to pack up writing on this forum or I'll end up getting a punch on the hooter. Blame it on post night shift illiteration.

Nigel,

Please, for goodness sake don't stop contributing to the forums - you and I may not have seen eye to eye on a lot of issues but have always appreciated your position.

The only reason I mentioned this was that I thought it could be taken two different ways.

And thank God you did Peter! Please do it again if it needs it, that's what is genuinely great about his site and its members. And I do truly value yours and everyone else's input, best place on the web bar none. But then everyone knows that don't they?

Didn't really mean I would stop contributing - it was bit of tongue in cheek feeling sorry for myself after making a bit of a booby :O)

i've never got anywhere near what andy managed on there my best is 6-10 he catches em for fun, though i didn't fish medley for exactly the reasons that people have stated it was a circus. i just used to walk the dog down there.

as for writing one thing and it being taken a different way, don't worry about it, we've all done it and i'm sure we'll all do it again in the future.

half the fun is taking the piss out of some one who'se done a howler anyway.
