Welcome to FM Dazza.

If it's very slow moving you could plumb the depth as you would on a lake but if not just shot the float to sit nicely and then pinch a very small shot next to the hook and keep adding depth and running the float through until you see the float start to drag as the shot drags along the bottom.

Depending on whether you're fishing a waggler or stick float if it's slow moving I would keep the shotting light, either shirt button style on the stick with light shot nearest the hook and heavier towards the float and if it's waggler maybe just two or three small droppers over the last third of the depth if it's reasonably deep.

There will be lots of shotting variations but you won't go far wrong with these and you'll figure out your own adjustments as you go along.

Use a thick waggler float in a slow paced area to start with. Master that, then fish twice the distance.

Progress onto a stick float at rod-length on a slow paced water, move onto a faster paced water, finally fish twice distance and twice pace. At this point you will have the basics.

Hi dazza,

1. Here are three standard shotting patterns that are used for Stick & Avon floats on running water (depending on how you want to present your bait):

2. Here are some standard shotting patterns that are used on stillwaters or very slow moving waters.

Below is a shot conversion chart to help when shotting your floats.

Don't bother plumbing for the depth, just adjust your depth each run through if there's no bite till you catch bottom here and there.

That way you can build up a picture in your head of what the bottom is like and where the holes are with the bonus of picking off fish that are up in the water.

Exactly the way I go.
