The final of the 119th Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship took place on the Lake of Menteith and saw a total of 60 anglers take to the water, whittled down from the 397 original entrants to the competition through the heats since April.

This years’ championship, sponsored by the Glasgow Angling Centre and run by SANACC, also doubled as the qualifier for the 2012 Home International events, so there was all to play for.  Fished on a catch and release basis, the rules saw the first three trout retained with 2lb then added to an angler’s total for every fish released after that.

In conditions that saw spells of heavy rain and light winds the trout fell to a number of methods; with Blobs, Boobies, Cormorants and dry flies all taking fish. In the end it was Kelso Angling Association’s Ronnie Glass, fishing manager at Orvis in Kelso, who proved  top rod, with 27lb 9.8oz from a total of 12 trout.

Not far behind in second place was Allan Smith of Stormontfield Angling Club, also with 12 fish, but with a lesser total weight of 25lb 3.2oz. The biggest fish of the competition was taken by Dounreay FFA’s Kevin Porteous at 4lb 13.4oz.
