Young Ricky Donovan landed a carp that weighed over half his own body weight on his recent trip to Laroussi. Fishing “Le Bouleau” swim he tempted the magnificent specimen in 3m of water over a gravel bed, fishing double 14mm halibut pellets surrounded with 40 Quest Fruity Trifle boilie freebies. His previous PB was a 21lb common so this was quite a jump and, as many of his colleagues on the trip told him, it’s all downhill from here. Ricky takes up the story: “Asleep in my bivvy at 11.35pm I was woken by a small drop-back bite. Thinking it was a nuisance fish I tightened the line but 2 minutes later it roared off. “It took me 45 minutes to land it and we all thought it must be a catfish. When the fish first topped I thought I was dreaming and when my brother-in-law and friend put it on the mat I was sure I must be! “I still can’t believe it!” He added.
