Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

25th May 2001

Catch of the week at Grey Mist must go to bailiff, RichardMunns who had eighteen carp to 17lbs during his overnight session onSaturday. Most fish were mid to upper doubles and sport was so hecticthat he eventually wound in his lines to have a sleep. The bait asusual some secret boilie mix. Craig Challinor had eight doubles, besta mirror of 18lbs and a 15lbs common and lost three fish. JasonCooper had five doubles with the biggest a mirror of 18lbs.

On Saturday Grey Mist is closed for a ‘Kids Carp Teach-in’sponsored by Carpinn.com owned by member, Tommy Kelly who has donatedprizes. Come on you young budding carp anglers, it’s free and startsat 8-30am. Bring your own carp tackle if you have it, but for thosewho haven’t tackle will be provided.

In the evening it is our annual ‘Overnighter’ carp match whereyours truly takes part to get usually wet and tired, but no fish. Onething is for certain; things can only get better. As there is a limitmembers must book in with Ian Clutterbuck, tel. 01925 819033. Thefishery opens for business as usual at 5-30am on Sunday morning.

Sport on the Bridgewater Canal is patchy this week withfish in some areas having their minds fully fixed on their spawningrituals. Places where the water is shallower and consequently warmer, such as Preston Brook, they have spawned and are cleaning offin the margins. Decent sized bream in the 4 to 5lbs range reportedfrom the marina at Broadheath, members are reminded that although westill own the fish in the marina fishing is only allowed from theopposite towpath. Generally lots of gudgeon, skimmers and roach.

Ackers Pit is still fishing well and catches of qualityroach and bream to maggot or paste. As regards the ban on troutpellets I mentioned in my column last week, because some are more orless identical the use of ALL pellets is no longer allowed.

Similarly the conditions at Cicily Mill have brought aboutthe same ban on all pellets. Such decisions are taken after carefulconsideration of the facts and with the welfare of the fish in mind. The new pegs at this fishery hardly see the light of day as thefishing is so good anglers are queuing up to use them. Tench, crucians, roach and bream are really providing some excellent sport.Alan Povey reports his best tench to date weighing in at 7-14-0. Hetempted the specimen on corn using waggler tactics.

Snippets:

Tench are the target fish at Rixton Claypits with fish to5lbs reported this past week.

Astle Pool, mainly small carp and roach. Big breampotential from area near island.

Crucians, tench, and roach from Woodshaw Reservoir.

Report that Wide Hole is currently full of carp andbream.

The Pike Teach-in at Moore Quarry held last Sundayattracted 26 members who learned a few wrinkles and more importantlythe correct way to handle these prehistoric predators. Expert tuitionwas kindly given by the Pike Angling Club who will be organisinganother event during October with possibly a change of venue to GreyMist Mere.
