8th April 2002

Despite the glorious weather over the last weekend anglers are only slowly getting out and about, with many waters offering exclusive fishing due to this situation. Lymm Dam is offering plenty of action with roach and perch readily taking most baits, with the odd bream over 3lb reported amongst them.

Member Jeff Smith reported a good day’s fishing on Statham Pool over the last week. Fishing hard on the bottom he reports that action was not as fast as fishing high in the water, but it did sort out the bigger fish. He caught bream up to 4lb and hybrids to 2lb making his session very enjoyable.

Village Pool keeps producing very well, and it is at this moment in time our most popular water by far. Over the road on Whitley Pool daytime action is focused on the deep end, the end nearest Village Pool car park. Against the trees members are catching tench by the dozen, averaging over 2lb 8oz. Amongst these catches are crucians, uncoloured goldfish and carp of every colour and variety.

Further towards the shallow end serious action is restricted to early morning and dusk, although if things follow their normal pattern, action will soon swap to the shallower water.

Over last weekend fishing was a little slow for carp anglers on Belmont Pool, although roach, rudd and perch were very active. This was confirmed by member Dave Maher last Saturday, where he struggled for the odd carp run whilst his grandson bagged up on silver fish.

Members who have visited the Belmont site will have seen the development of two new pools, which are already nicely filling up with water. There is still a lot of landscaping work required yet, and pond life will be allowed to become established prior to any fish being stocked. The larger of the two new pools is an interesting serpentine shape, complete with an island, bars, deeps and other fish holding features which are nicely spread around the pool.

Fish are now showing along the whole length of the Sankey Canal, in Warrington, although the current hotspot is Callands Pool, where amongst the numerous small roach, skimmers and perch are some good sized bream.

Last Sunday work party efforts were directed to our newest pool at Thelwall. This work on Manor Pool has improved access and removed some of the snags from the water. Manor Pool is a small water very close to Statham and as yet its fish stocks are unknown, please send in your reports, good or bad, as such reports will assist the Club to address any problems.

Subs can still be paid by all the methods described on your reminder forms, I would also like to reiterate that there is no penalty for late payment of subs. The old surcharges have long since been scrapped.
