Round 6 Porth 15th July 2001
The 6th round of the league took the faithful few to PorthReservoir once again. Conditions were perfect with a lightNorth-westerly breeze blowing up the water just enough to put aripple on without inducing the urge to take up surfing. (How oftendoes that happen?). A somewhat reduced turnout of 18 assembled forthe draw in good spirits. The plan was to fish one section on eachbank using pegs 30-40 and 80-90 based on recent form.
Bad news was about to threaten my carefully laid plan. The Rangerhad arrived to take the gear to the other side. However, the key forthe padlocks had not. The boat was chained to the dock, the outboardwas locked in a garage and the key was about 30 miles away atSiblyback. Just when it seemed we might have to resort to plan B andpeg a section in the off-form Meadow, Dave “Cracker” Taylor came tothe rescue. With the aid of a hammer and various other tools from hisSwag-bag he was able to make a few minor adjustments to the padlocksand we were in action.
The fishing lived up to expectations with a very even contest, which was just as well after the early excitement. Once again almostevery angler recorded double figures giving weight to my theory thatthis is the fairest match venue in the county. Top scorer on the daywas Phil Watters (Gwinear) with 22lb from peg 38. (A bit dodgy whenthe organiser wins his own match) This comprised a mixed bag ofmainly skimmers plus roach, rudd and perch taken on pole alternatingbetween 11m and 3m with red maggot or caster on the hook fished overgroundbait.
Mike Yates (Clive’s Tackle) also fished the pole at 11m for asimilar mix totalling 20lb 8oz from peg 34. Strangely, both counted132 fish.
Joint third place went to Dave Taylor (St Columb Magic) at peg 84and Roger Cannock (St Columb AC) at peg 30 with 19lb 4oz. Just behindthem on 19lb was Graham “Humpty Dumpty” Curnow completing the verytight frame.
All in all a good day was had by everyone. Mike Yates picked upthe golden peg £ 10 narrowly missing out on £ 105. The nextmatch in 2 weeks time will be at Penvose.
