Sixty young anglers enjoyed professional coaching last weekend (August 18/19) on the Grand Union Canal in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

The keen youngsters attended Canal Fields to reel in expert advice from fishing coaches from the Professional Anglers Association (PAA) and the National Federation of Anglers (NFA).

They included young people with physical disabilities and learning difficulties from the Reach Out Project at the Diocesan Education Centre in Welwyn Garden City.

The two sessions, Saturday between 3pm and 6pm and Sunday between 11am and 2pm, were fully booked. The event was organised by the Environment Agency and Dacorum Borough Council.

The rain stayed away for most of the weekend, allowing fish such as roach, bream and perch to be caught by the budding anglers.

The winning weight of fish caught was 8lb 2oz on Saturday and 5lb 1oz on Sunday, although everyone who attended left with an Environment Agency goody bag.

Agency fisheries officer James Grigg said: “We all had a fantastic day. We are now hoping to run the event again next year because everyone enjoyed it so much.”
