Round 10 Porth 9/9/01

The final visit to Porth reservoir this season already, my howtime flies when you’re having fun. A blustery day with a distinctlyautumnal feel in the air evoked the reappearance of all manner offleeces and bodywarmers and left me wondering why the hell I hadn’tbrought mine! But we anglers are made of tougher stuff; not even abroken foot could deter Simon Poynter. I thought the idea of Footballwas to kick the ball and not the members of the opposing team.

The usual sections on either bank were pegged 30-40 and 80-90.Could I finally draw the North bank? Could I hell.

After a late start by popular request the match turned into verymuch a game of two halves. The more sheltered North bank fished itsb—–ks off while anglers on the South side struggled for bites.

Another dazzling performance from the unstoppable Simon Poynter(Milo/Bill Knott/Clive’s tackle Uncle Tom Cobbly and all) saw himtake the top honours despite the foot injury. Perhaps we can arrangefor them to break his arm next time, that ought to slow him down!31lb 10oz of small skimmers, roach and perch taken on pole and maggotover groundbait from peg 82.Well done to the man with more sponsorsthan Bob Nudd.

At the other end of the section, John Shirley (Phoenix A) foundquality skimmers in co-operative mood at peg 88 putting 30lb 11oz onthe scales to be just pipped into the runner-up position.

Third placed Dave Barnes (Clive’s Tackle) took 24lb 12oz from peg81. Meanwhile at peg 38, Mike Yates (Newtown Angling) worked with 5mwhip and double red maggot over groundbait for a mainly skimmer netof 23lb to take 4th overall and top weight on the South bank section.Completing the frame were Barry Little (Phoenix A) 21lb 8oz (peg 80)and Simon Final (OB Joyful) 20lb 6oz (peg 85).

For my money, I’d rename this the Porth league and fish here everyweek. Sadly, it’s off to Retallack in two weeks but who knows, it maysurprise us. It’s another of those venues that’s impossible topractice on as a pleasure session can produce large bags of qualityfish. On match days however, the fish seem to vanish. That’s thechallenge, see you next time.
