Round 2 Whiteacres 27/01/02
With 60mph winds and rain forecast for the day, a rapid rethink of the pegging was called for. In the end we opted to fish Python in favour of the exposed Jenny’s lake with pegs in a line along the wides having the wind off the bank. We also removed the pegs from the high bank on Pollawyn, where the wind was particularly bad, and put them all in the arms with the proviso that anglers drawn at the ends of the arms could not cast out of the arm. Sycamore remained as planned being fairly sheltered with the exception of a couple of pegs. This would hopefully give everybody a reasonable chance of being able to fish his or her peg. The pegs were randomised to even out the end peg advantages, this caused much confusion but all turned out quite well in the end. The rain held off for most of the day and the fishing was not too bad with only one blank recorded. Only 12 teams fishing this week as the Retallack team had pulled out.
A-section on Sycamore threw up the best weights with overall winner Roger Cannock (St Columb Magic) on permanent peg 5 putting 23lb 12oz on the scales. Roger fished a groundbait feeder cast to the gap between the islands taking several carp on worm and caster. He also picked up the golden peg but sadly, being only the second round, this had only accumulated £ 65.
B-section on Pollawyn produced the lowest weights, as expected from the arms, but was quite even. Drawn at peg 44, section winner Bob Noble (Bait Bunker) managed 4-5lb of bits on the pole plus one carp taken on straight lead with maggot for a total of 9lb 12oz.
C-section on Python fished quite well with plenty of roach and tench showing in many double-figure bags. Dave Taylor (St Columb Magic) fished the pole on peg 16 with maggot or pinkie over groundbait for a total of 15lb 7oz.
Team-wise, the result was an exact repeat of the first round with Bait Bunker taking the honours with 35 points. Joint second place was shared by St Columb Magic and Team Newtown on 33. Next round takes us back to Porth so let’s hope the wind drops by then.
