Young James Farrow, 17, fished Snetterton Lakes, near Attleborough, Norfolk on Saturday and was overjoyed when at about 5pm he caught a 22lb carp, a personal best fish and a long-held ambition.

His joy was to turn to tragedy, however.

Keen angler James spoke excitedly about his capture to his family on his mobile phone and shared a cup of tea with his fellow anglers around the lake before settling down for the night to try and catch another carp.

His parents phoned to check on James before going to bed that night, as they always did when he was night fishing, and he was fine and still talking about his great catch. The next morning his father went to look for him when he didn’t answer his phone. He found James, a diabetic, lying at the edge of the water.

Paramedics failed to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

An inquest in Norwich yesterday was told that James died from drowning after falling into the lake because he developed hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) as a result of his diabetes.

The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
