Young Liam Welch, just 7, and son of RMC Angling boss Ian Welch, fished RMC’s Burghfield Match Lake in Reading and landed a total of seven carp, including one of 9lb 6oz and his first ever double at 10lb 7oz.

Dad Ian was there to lend a hand with the landing net and unhooking the fish, but mainly to pick up a few tips.

Liam used a method feeder and two grains of artificial corn on a 10’s hook to tempt the fish. Tackle was 10lb main line with a 10lb fluorocarbon hooklink. Groundbait mix was Nutrabaits Carpet Feed laced with trout pellet, corn and crushed hemp.

He fished peg 30 in the mouth of the bay from 5pm until bedtime (8pm). Liam cast his own tackle and played all the fish without any help (or hindrance) from dad, but allowed him to pull a baiting needle out of his finger when he accidentally spiked himself.
