A snaggy swim on the River Nene gave up a gruesome secret when workers were sent in to trawl for rubbish…… For instead of the expected shopping trolleys, the probe revealed a dead horse still in its horsebox.
Police and RSPCA officials mounted an investigation into the find near Peterborough city centre yesterday.
RSPCA Inspector Kathryn Parfitt, said: “Given the extent of decomposition it’s impossible to establish whether the animal was dead or alive when it went into the water, and it appears to have been there for some time.”
The Environment Agency said its staff were originally searching for debris such as abandoned shopping trolleys and cars.
A local predator angler said, “Doesn’t surprise me, some of those zander and pike anglers will use anything for bait to give them an edge.”
