A beautiful little reel from Spanish company Grauvell, no doubt at all about that, providing you like colourful and shiny cosmetics which, let’s face it, many of us do. But if understated is your bag then this isn’t the reel for you.

The metallic grey, gold and blue finish with white and gold lettering looks very chic and will certainly turn a few heads on the lake or riverbank.

Yet underneath the finery is a well-engineered piece of equipment that feels good and operates smoothly and efficiently. The bale-arm snaps back smartly and the rotor feels well balanced and solid. The front drag can be very finely calibrated to give way at whatever setting you choose and the rubberised handle feels extremely good to the touch. Take at look at the spec:

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

I’m impressed. I admit to thinking at first that it was yet another flash bit of kit that was made more to catch the eye than it was to catch fish.

But no, it feels like some good materials and clever engineering have gone into it. It certainly feels good in use and I was particularly pleased with the line lay and how well the front drag performed.

A reel well worth the asking price, and one that should serve you well for float fishing, light to medium legering, and lure fishing – providing your favourite colour combination isn’t matt black on black…
