David and his pole-caught pike

I am Secretary and Treasurer of our local angling club, Alford and District AC, working at Finnveden Powertrain Components factory in Alford. I caught the pike on a Preston Zyrium pole on Middy 14s elastic, 0.13 Preston Reflo line, a size 14 barbless Kamasan B611 hook and a tiny piece of luncheon meat.

David and the 25-pounder caught on pike gear
Because the carp at our pit have had a lot of bread on the top this year I was groundbaiting with mashed bread and catapulted pellets and caught five carp. Then the swim went dead and I wondered if the skimmers and roach had moved in.

The bailiff told me to put a small piece of meat on and I would catch a big roach. Down went the float and I saw straight away that it was a pike. It bottomed the elastic a few times, but I managed to hold on and 45 minutes later I landed it.

The bailiff took some photographs and we estimated the fish at 18 to 20lb. I’ve caught a 25-pounder from the same pit since then, last Thursday in fact, but that one was on proper pike gear.

They say there is an even bigger pike in the pit so I’ll try to get that one this week.
