For all my legering except where I want a Baitrunner facility, I’ve preferred the Fightin’ Drag type reels from Shimano ever since they first introduced them, finding it very handy to be able to flick the lever over to give an instantly slacker drag when the fish is close to the net and at its most likely to make a last minute dash for freedom.
I now use this reel (the smaller 2500, 6lb line version) for chub fishing; it’s exactly the right size for this type of fishing and I much prefer double handles for the balance they bring to a reel.
My only criticism is that the anti-reverse switch is too small and fiddly, but apart from that there is no question that it’s the best reel of its size and type I’ve ever used. Line lay is superb and the drag settings very accurate. The reel is a real pleasure to use.
I have yet to use it for trotting a float down a swim but from handling it I think it will be as good, if not better, than any other fixed spool reel I’ve used. But let’s just say that the jury is still out on that one.
For those who care about such things the Stradic GTM-RA is very attractive reel, looking as though it’s worth every penny of its price tag which, as far as I’m concerned, it is.
