David and the 23.12

Back in October 2003 we ran a report of some fabulous pike that David Taylor caught from one of his club lakes, a club of which he is secretary and treasurer. The remarkable thing was that one pike, estimated at 18 to 20lb was a caught on a pole. He then went back later and caught one on ‘proper’ pike gear that weighed in at 25lb.

Well, this year he’s been at it again, not on pole gear but targeting the pike with pike gear.

A beauty at 27.8

David, from Alford, Lincs, says, “I’d been the week before and saw a large pike with a small pike swim underneath my rods. I dropped a sprat in the side and caught the small one.

“I returned the following week and it was bright and fair with a lot of wind so instead of fishing in the wind I sat behind a tree so I was shaded.

“I decided to fish in the clear water about 2 to 3 foot in the margins. I dropped the sardine in the next swim to my left and the other sardine I dropped in the corner, and then sat back to listen to the news on the radio.

“It was 8 o’clock when I noticed the float on my left hand rod bob then slip under. I stuck straight away and the pike put up quite a fight but I landed it okay.

And another 27-pounder just to round things off for a while!

“As I had no camera I rang the bailiff, D Martin, to photograph it for me as the wife was still in bed. It weighed 23lb 12oz.

“I’d just returned this fish when the other float shot off like a rocket. I played this fish hard and landed it after a good fight. Then I rang the wife who was up by then. This one weighed 27lb 8oz.

“Then last Friday I caught another 27lb pike from the same pit.” He added.
