Barrie Rickards says

There are two species of sea fish that I have always struggled with, namely mullet and bass. This book explains why, at least as far as bass are concerned.

I have lacked any application, which is why I have caught so few. I’m not sure I’ll have the application to catch a big one but if I follow at least some of this book then I’m in with a chance.

Although the book assumes some knowledge it is not really more knowledge than the average sea angler would have – and that includes me. It is very clearly and well written with just about every bit of information you could possibly need. The chapter on baits is superb.

The book begins with an interesting chapter on the biology of bass, which is important given the work in recent years to protect bass and their breeding areas. After that it’s straight into shore fishing, where to find bass inshore, reefs and rocks, boat fishing for bass and offshore bass, and there’s a final section on lures which is especially important today with so many available.

The very last chapter on conservation could just as easily have gone with the first on biology, or visa versa. And the book has an index; I like a book to have an index as too few do so.

This book is quite excellent for its mass of well-organised information, at least some of which I’ll be trying to put into action when I try for bass this coming December. But before that I have some damned mullet to sort out.

The only odd thing about this book is the second half oft the title. What does it mean?
