ANDY NELLIST LIKES a plan but is always prepared to grab an opportunity when one presents itself, and the morning he caught a 4lb 13oz perch was no exception.
Andy and his big ‘opportunist’ perch of 4lb 13oz
Along with fishing pal Warren ‘Wol’ Gaunt, specialist angler Andy Nellist is still hunting big eels.
Only the other week Andy caught one of 6lb 3oz, while Wol hit the jackpot more recently with a huge snake of 7lb 15oz.
It was while Andy was eel fishing in the still dark, early hours of the morning that he experienced a series of fast bites that he couldn’t hit. He soon suspected that perch were responsible.
When dawn broke he baited a marginal swim, close to the branches of a fallen tree, with about 50 lobworm pieces.
He didn’t have to wait long, for the perch took off with his lobworm bait. And this time Andy felt the solid resistance when he struck. Even then it was far from all over as the big perch fought like that terrestrial stripy, the tiger. It was all of four minutes before he subdued it but the struggle continued as he fought to get it into the net.
The big perch pulled the scales to 4lb 13oz and was remarkable for its spectacularly bright colouring.
Andy is no stranger to big perch, having previously caught 12 over 4lb from three different waters. You can read the full story of his Wilstone catches on FishingMagic.
Andy, a solicitor, commented, “I’m having a great season so far, and it’s not over yet.”
