Overview

OKUMA AIRFRAME REELS have been around for a good few years now, and have truly stood the test of time.

Sold in two sizes – 4/6 and 7/9 – the wide-arbour Airframe is simplicity personified. Made from fibre-reinforced resin with a stainless steel one-way bearing, the Airframe is not a fancy reel but it is a versatile reel. Whether you are a trout angler or a bass fly fisher, it could be the answer to your prayers.

One advantage of plastic is that it doesn’t corrode and is a doddle to rinse. Leave it salty and it won’t really matter.

A huge range of adjustment

The disc drag is operated by a large star on the back of the reel, and gives a huge range of adjustment. Unlike some cheap reels, the drag doesn’t work against you while you are reeling in, and the direction is reversible for left-handers.

It’s not a true lightweight, but beats some cheap metal reels for balance with a good rod.

Mark Williams’ Verdict

I didn’t expect wonders from my first Airframe four years ago but it delivered service in spades. It’s tough as old boots, easy to convert to the directional wind of your choice, completely corrosion free and has a good drag system.

I wouldn’t try it for bonefish (though I’ve no reason to doubt it would be good) but for trout and bass fishing, it has been simply superb. It’s been covered in saltwater and sand, soaked and generally abused. A simple rinse under the tap and it’s ready o go again.

Best of all is the price – I now have two 7/9 bodies and six spools for the price of one so-called superior metal reel.
