Liam’s Purple Patch at Borwickfishing.co.ukLiam Briggs, a regular at www.borwickfishing.co.uk had his reward in early May. Liam often helps bailiff, Jimmy White, with maintenance tasks on site such as planting trees or netting the pools, but so far the fish have not been too kind to him and he has had to work hard for fish he has caught. He has had good fish of most species including Pike, Tench and Carp after putting in the hours, but in May his patience was repaid in style.Liam used his knowledge of the fish and the water to good effect and drew on bailiff Jimmy White’s experience to carefully choose his time for fishing for a 4 night session on Jimmy’s Lake. At this time of year all the fish are at their heaviest and fittest as they start to fatten up for the summer and prior to spawning. All fish lose weight when they spawn and sometimes a surprising amount. In 2006, Moonscale dropped from her peak of 31lb 8oz down to just over 24lb – shedding something over 7lb! She quickly put it back on over the Summer and Autumn and has already been caught earlier this year at her original weight over 31lb. The Carp can be expected to increase from now until they spawn in June or July, though the exact date will depend on the weather. They are growing now, as Liam can confirm. At 8am on the Tuesday of his stint he landed Moonscale at a massive 32lb 10oz, one of the biggest Carp in the North, a new Record for borwickfishing.co.uk and a personal best. But he was not finished yet and at 10pm he banked a 21lb 8 oz Mirror Carp. Wednesday was to be a memorable day too. At 3.30am he took his best Common Carp, a very deep fish weighing in at 21lb, followed 4 hours later by another Common of 17lb. He rounded off the day with yet another Common Carp at 14lb. Throughout the session he also had some smaller Carp and 8 Tench between 4lb and 8lb – a memorable catch in its own right. All Liam’s fish were taken from the same swim on popped-up corn. Some cynics have pointed out that after Moonscale it was all downhill though Liam, quite properly, remains delighted with his catch!!
