Yorkshire Water’s Angling Competition Gets Off To A Record Breaking Start!Yorkshire Water’s Riverlife angling competition got off to a flying start last weekend when one of the 70 anglers competing on the River Aire landed 49lb of bream, smashing the river’s existing record by just a few ounces.
The competition, which takes place on seven rivers across the region, marks the water company’s £ 240 million investment in its waste water treatment works. The work, which will improve the quality of river water, will create a more natural environment and encourage a wide variety of fish and wildlife to thrive. Eight matches will take place on each of the seven rivers between now and March when the winners of each river will be announced. The overall winner will scoop themselves £ 1000 and a further £ 250 for their chosen angling club. Last season’s winner was regular participant Paul Bacon from Mexborough who fished his way to victory on the River Swale. The other rivers in the competition are the Ouse, Ure, Don, Calder and Nidd and with the competition on most rivers about to begin, there’s just enough time left for anglers to get involved. Competition organiser, Jessica Hall, said: “Yorkshire Water’s Riverlife angling championship is a great way to show people in the region that the company is committed to making a big difference to the environment. “Each year the championship attracts a staggering number of competitors and we hope that this year’s will be better than ever.” |
