Publisher’s Overview

Reading this book is like taking a private lesson with the Master of fly-fishing! It is the perfect reference book for the fly fisher who wants to improve his skill. Over 40 casts covered in step-by-step detail with full colour photographs. Types of casts include the sidearm and overhead casts; hauling; roll cast; reach cast; casts for tight quarters, wind and weighted flies and lines; and distance casts. Lefty also teaches the mechanics of casting, and a section on the physical movements explains how to prevent injuries.

Casting should be nearly effortless and this book shows that by understanding the physics and dynamics of casting and how to adapt to various fishing conditions your casting will greatly improve.

This book will enable the fly fisher, whether they fish salt water, lakes or rivers, heavy rods or light rods, to learn everything from small changes in movements that greatly improves their casting to totally new takes on traditional casts.

The Author

Lefty Kreh started fly fishing in 1947 and since then he has become one of the most respected fly fishers, instructors, photographers and fishing writers on the planet, having written more than a dozen books about fishing and contributed to many others.

Lefty Kreh is a no nonsense practical and pragmatic fly fisherman with a fantastic sense of humour, always a pleasure to be with and a font of knowledge. Lefty Kreh has been an outdoor writer for more than 45 years and was named Angler of the Year by Fly Rod and Reel magazine in 1997.

verdict

I’ve long been a fan of Lefty Kreh. In my view he’s the best when it comes to casting a fly line and to teaching others how to do it.

I’ve had lessons from the best of British and seen the best in action, but Lefty Kreh casts with a fluidity that makes a less than average caster like me want to throw up with envy. He has a languid, casual style that goes in the face of the distance and accuracy he can achieve with a fly line.

This book is expensive at £ 30, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t value for money. It is. It’s a big, big book. Out of curiosity I weighed it and the finger on the scales crept past the 4lb mark. The content matches the weight; it’s heavy with top quality text and photographs.

It was another book of Lefty Kreh’s I read some years ago that gave me the kick I needed to improve my casting. It was he who explained the principles and mechanics of a fly cast that gave me the insight I needed to know what to work on. This book explains all that and a hell of a lot more besides.

I defy any fly fisherman to read it and not improve his casting as a result.
