Manufacturer’s Overview

sk3 fly rods have medium fast actions, which are easy to load and will present a fly at range with accuracy and precision time after time. Light weight and well balanced in the hand, they are ideal for a wide range of casting styles and are the perfect choice for newcomers and experts alike. Available in seven sizes from 8′ #3/4 up to 10′ #7/8 they cover the vast majority of freshwater fly fishing applications.

Aqua green gloss blanks made with top grade Toray carbon fibres.

Matching 1K carbon weave on the base ‘logo’ section for extra durability and style.

‘AA’ grade Portuguese cork handles with subtle ‘thumb indent’ on 9’6″ and 10′ models for extra comfort and stability of grip. These rod lengths feature a full wells handle shape with a neat extension butt for playing fish. Rod lengths of 9′ and below have slightly slimmer half wells handle design with sk3 logo laser etched onto the base of the reel seat.

Reel seat is machined from lightweight, marine grade aluminium which is then hard anodised in black to prevent corrosion. A fixed hood is keyed to a channel built into the woven carbon insert. This automatically centres and holds any reel size securely and ensures a permanent anchorage. The oversize screw thread on the sliding hood ensures reel connection is smooth and trouble free. A small fix with big consequences!

Lightweight high stand-off Aluminium Oxide stripper guides anodised in black for stealth.

Single leg intermediate guides which are extremely lightweight and flexible without sacrificing strength. 50% fewer guide wraps results in less interference with the blank action and also reduces overall weight. Closed loop reduces friction for longer casts. Stainless steel construction with industrial hard chrome plating for performance and durability. Lightweight hayfork tip guides complete the picture.

Dark green tyings to match the blank with subtle gold tippings on the butt section only.

Alignment lines and length/line weight information on each section for easy set up and ring alignment.

Supplied in a good quality cloth bag with a durable triangular cordura tube with strap and carry handle for safe transportation.

Backed up by the SONIK Product Warranty and RAPIDEX immediate replacement service for total peace of mind.

verdict

It’s a very well made rod, with a partitioned rod sock and cordura covered hard carrying case. Also has a lifetime warranty. All whippings are excellent, cork handle is good quality. Medium/Fast action that allows a variety of casts to be made from tight loops with a double haul to roll casts.

The handle has a thumb indent in it which, although some people might find annoying and unnecessary, I quite liked as it’s just where I hold the rod anyway and was more comfortable. There is enough power in the rod to handle hard fighting fish without feeling under-gunned.

The lifetime warranty costs £ 35 each time you use it so on a rod costing approx £ 75 would it be worth it? The rod isn’t perfectly straight, although this doesn’t detract from the action when using it. Although it’s rated for #6 and #7 lines, I don’t think it would cope well with a #7 and would become overloaded quite quickly to the point of breaking.

This is an excellent entry level rod into the world of fly fishing and would be an ideal starter rod for someone wanting to get kitted up but not break the bank. For the price, you’re not going to get the equivalent of a Sage or Loomis, but you don’t expect that. What you do get is a very good rod to start to learn casting with. I’d struggle to put a full #6 line out with it, although I was getting between 20 and 25 yards of distance once I’d got the timing of the rod sorted.

This is a rod I would highly and strongly recommend to any beginner, or someone looking for a backup rod.

Excellent Value for Money.
