Since the very early sixties I have been a Daiwa fan and seeing Stu Dexter (editor of Coarse Fisherman magazine) using the TD-R at Clattercote I felt I had to get somewhere on a par with him; we did both have a Daiwa Capricorn reel as well.
Then this model, the Team Daiwa 2508D caught my eye and I wondered if this could be as good, but not having used the TD-R how would I know? Then again, does it matter if it does what you want faultlessly and I am pleased to say, this does it all!
First of all the casting of the line; the reel, like a lot of Daiwas now, winds the line with a bias towards the front of the spool. At first it doesn’t look right because we have become accustomed to seeing the lines evenly spread from front to back of the spool, but fear not, this line lay is perfect for casting.
You don’t get the problems of wind knots coming off prematurely and even if the bail is left open on a full spool, the line seems to remain in place and not springing off all over the place. Having looked again, it’s exactly the same on my Capricorn (doh!), but because that uses heavier line I didn’t notice it.
It casts great, a fairly easy swing with a one ounce maggot feeder and it was heading for the far bank of the Thames, about 60-65 yards. With a bit of effort or perhaps a heavier feeder I would have no trouble at all putting it on the far bank. Just the job.
The retrieve is as smooth as silk and not too fast, with bream in mind you don’t want to be skull-dragging them in, so a 4.7–1 ratio is just fine. I haven’t noticed any line twist at all and with the Twist Buster feature (I have it on all my other Daiwas) I don’t expect to see any. It is one of the best systems of all.
It’s only with the acquisition of this new reel that I’ve realised what the “AirBail” feature is and yet that, again, is on three other Daiwa reels I have. It’s surprising what you take for granted, but it probably makes for a stronger bail without the additional weight. Whatever, it feels good and secure.
All in all, I am thoroughly delighted with this new reel. Like all tackle these days, have a shop around and you’ll see many shops doing a deal on this model for less than £100 and I thoroughly recommend it.
