What the Manufacturer says –

This Prowla 10ft 6ins boat rod has been designed from high spec carbon to give an ultra slim but powerful blank. It has nine SIC braid safe rings large enough to cope with stop knots and heavy lines.

The rod folds exactly in half, ring to ring, for easy setting up and packing away, whilst the slim cork handle with non-slip duplon grip will sit neatly in a boat rest.

This rod lends itself for use with either a fixed spool or multiplier reel, and is a superb all-round boat rod for drifter, trolling or dead bait fishing.

Ideal on lochs, lakes, rivers, broads or reservoirs it will allow you to hook and hold big fish in deep water yet, on the other hand, has a fantastic through action that allows you to fish close to the boat on a shallow broad or in a weedy bay. It’s flexible enough for you to use with big dead baits on a snaggy river or fen drain and, at 10ft 6ins, is the optimum length for playing big pike around the boat helping you to keep them away from anchor ropes or drogue lines.

What the reviewer says –

I took this rod to Ireland with me to fish both the River Shannon and Lough Ree at times when I felt I needed a rest from the lure fishing. True enough it did get used, but sadly it didn’t land me any fish; all the pike that I caught came to lures.

However, it doesn’t stop me from saying that this is a really nice rod. It’s based on their longer 12 foot Bait rod, being almost identical in every way, but for the length where something shorter is a little easier to handle in a boat of limited length.

My boat is just 4 metres so making this rod ideal especially if you get a tangle around the tip, you can easily untangle it without having a part of the rod (maybe with the reel also) hanging dangerously over the side. It’s only 18 inches shorter than the Bait rod, but it makes all the difference to boat safety.

The loss of length matters little when fishing from a boat, a nice easy swing is often all that is required to cast to a promising spot. However, just because it says “Boat” on the label doesn’t mean it’s restricted to that purpose. There is no earthly reason why you couldn’t use this rod from the bank also if the conditions of the river wouldn’t allow you to use a boat; it would be perfect for fishing the margins anyway.

Grey’s John Horsey caught this 33lbs 6ozs pike
on the Prowla Boat rod.

They do say it has a through action, but I feel that there is an emphasis towards the tip end. Although it is very strong and will deal with the biggest of pike, I believe. You should have every confidence in this rod.

I may get a further chance to use this rod soon when the river settles a little more and either allows me to get the boat out or at least I can fish in some comfort from the bank. Right now with a 10 knot current and my favourite swims two feet underwater, nothing is going to cope with that. Neither could it be classed as being fun, but I wanted to get the review out to you before the season ends completely.

It is a nicely finished rod, thoughtfully ringed with strong triple legged and lined rings throughout. The finish is matt apart from the glossy whippings and it looks smart and to the part. I’ve included a picture of John and the whopper he caught to show its possibilities and because I haven’t caught yet, but that’s fishing for you.

Highly recommended!
