The England Youth Flyfishing team fished Lough Owel, Mullingar, County Westmeath for the annual Home International Youth Championship, and won gold, making it their third win in four matches. Ireland is always tricky so this was a special victory, and their first in Ireland since 1996.
The team of 14 teenagers from across England, led by Kieran Bonas of Bedford, all caught fish and this was crucial to a very substantial win. With 38 fish they were a full 10 fish ahead of the home Irish team. Scotland had 24 and Wales 12.
Youth Team Manager, Phil Longstaff said:
“The lads were fantastic, coping with flat calms then blustery rain and strong winds at times. It was very difficult conditions for drifting boats, but our team were used to battling the elements and happy to fish the lumpy water. Tactics and areas were thoroughly worked out during two days of hard practice and positive analysis that meant everyone knew exactly what to do and I am so proud of them all.”
The team and Manager were very ably assisted by coach Gary Owen from Leicester, and a large party of parents, grandparents, supporters and helpers making the trip a great success and worth the whole year’s planning.
