This year’s British Pike Championship final was fished on Whittlesey AA’s waters with 204 anglers battling it out on the fen drains. As far as conditions were concerned the frost that was forecast for the night before the final never materialised and the morning of the contest brought perfect, overcast conditions.
Although fish catches were slightly down on previous years in terms of numbers more large pike were weighed in and Bill Dowding, from Loughton, Essex, caught two for 29lb (19lb and 10lb) in the first hour into the match on popped-up roach deadbaits; a rare early success as most of the anglers caught into the second half of the match.
Robert Peters from Aylesbury took second place with two fish for 28lb (13lb 6oz and 14lb 10oz) and in third place was Bob Goodwin from Milton Keynes who banked two fish for 25lb 8oz (11lb 6oz and 14lb 2oz).
