Work, on the River Welland in Market Harborough, is to include removing sections from weirs to improve the aquatic environment.
Norman Robinson, Environment Manager, said:
“The weirs obstruct the river and prevent fish from moving upstream. We know from work we have carried out elsewhere that improving fish passage has a number of benefits. It includes helping to establish healthy fish stocks with a diverse number of species. This contributes to the local economy through angling and tourism and increases our understanding of fish migration allowing us to identify potential for further improvements.”
The work at Market Harborough includes removing sections of concrete from the weirs. The fish passes are designed to be low maintenance and complement water level and flood risk management in the town as well as further afield.
The work, which will help the River Welland meet Water Framework Directive targets, complements the Welland for People and Wildlife Project being undertaken by the Welland Rivers Trust.
