Round 11 Retallack Canal 23/9/01
A warm day with light winds was the consolation prize for thoseturning out for this match. Eighteen anglers made just about enough for twosections. Unfortunately this venue is a nightmare to peg with onlyabout 4 pegs capable of producing the winner. With the leaguereaching the critical stage a good draw was essential today. Twobattles are unfolding; between Graham Curnow and Simon Poynter for1st and between Mike Yates and myself for 3rd.
At the end of the day there were no surprises with Graham Curnow(Newtown Angling) cruising to an easy win from hot peg 42. Grahamfished long pole and maggot across to take one good carp plus breamtotalling 25lb 7oz.
Next door on peg 41 Dave Barnes (Clive’s Tackle) was left countingthe cost of 9 lost carp! The one he did manage to land plus bits gavehim 11lb 8oz for second.
Long pole fished across to a far bank bush was the successfulmethod for John Wilson (Phoenix A) at peg 37. Two late carp boostedhis weight to 8lb 9oz which was good enough for third.
At peg 35 Mike Yates (Newtown Angling) included a carp in his 4thplaced 7lb 2oz bag.
The “A” section was a much closer affair with no carp landed andonly ounces separating the top 5 section places. Section winner and5th overall was John Shirley (Phoenix A) with 5lb 8oz mainly skimmersfrom peg 8. A tench and a 2lb skimmer formed the bulk of AlanFarnworth’s 5lb 3oz net. Gwinear backed Alan is the league’s mostsenior angler who opted to fish the pole close in at peg 18.
Just 3 matches to go in this league and things are really hottingup at the top of the table although the top 10 remains unchanged. Thenext match in two weeks time has been switched from Penvose toOakside because of a club match there on the Saturday.
