Following the cull by gill-netting of 6000 of pike from Ireland’s Lough Sheelin the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board have sold half the cull to a pet food manufacturer.
The cull was made, so say the Fisheries Board, to protect the stocks of wild brown trout in the lough, but pike anglers are up in arms about it, protesting that it is a waste to kill one species of sporting fish for the sake of another.
The Pike Anglers Club of Great Britain have fought a long running battle with the Board about this gill-netting of pike that kills so many sporting fish.
