Stoke on Trent specialist Dave Colclough travelled down to Suffolk’s Melton Pit where he met local bait and flavour guru Dave Dowding of the Mr Wriggles bait and flavour company.
The pair fished method feeder tactics in neighbouring swims and took a total of 10 bream to just on 10lb over the two days. They also netted carp to mid doubles.
Fishing two rods each, one at 40yds and the other at 75yds they found there was only one feeding spell each night. That spell fell between 8pm and 2am.
Other than that there was just the odd bite at various times through the evening. Early morning through to midday was particularly dead, even though the conditions seemed to be quite good – mild and breezy.
Stoke’s Dave nobbled the biggest bream at exactly 10lb and the second biggest at exactly 9lb, while Suffolk’s Dave took the most fish, including bream to over 8lb and the biggest carp, and a really good looking fully scaled mirror.
Dave Dowding fished his own brand of boilies based on ‘The Block’, glugging them in Hale’s Corn Steep Liquor dip, while Dave Colclough used Richworth’s Esterberry glugged in Hale’s Fruity Dip. Dave D used his own Mr Wriggles Method Mix while Dave C used SBS Method Mix.
Dave Dowding commented: ‘We had been told that the fishing was slow but steady, which was spot on. What they didn’t tell us was that the fishing was slow but steady for only about six hours in each twenty-four!’
Dave Colclough added, ‘But we thoroughly enjoyed it. They weren’t the biggest fish we’ve caught from there, but they were quality fish all the same. And I’ll never get tired of catching those.’
