The much troubled Snake Pit at Brookside Fishery, near Warrington, has reopened for match fishing earlier than expected after filling up naturally. Not surprisingly, the 30-peg lake at the day-ticket complex benefited from the recent wet spell and fishery boss Mike Timmis decided to stock some carp and encourage the match fishermen to return.

And he got 25 on the very first day and top man was Andy Harkin (Harry’s Tackle) with 27lb 4oz from peg seven where he pole fished with maggot at seven metres to catch carp averaging with four ounces.

Steve Carrier (Taurus Trading) had 23lb 4oz and Phil Henry (Fisherman’s Tackle Birkenhead) was third on 22lb 15oz.

At Meadow View Fishery Gedd Dolan (Cheshire Angling) won off Lark Pool with a well taken 26lb 4oz.The fish are slow moving to floatfished baits so he wisely legered with a maggot feeder and found carp to 2lb on red and white maggot.

Mersey
This year it is called the “Millennium Fur & Feather” fishing match and as usual there is a prize for everyone who catches a fish.

It is the Christmas Fayre competition organised by the North West Association of Sea Angling Clubs and the most popular event on the River Mersey taking place on Sunday December 17.

And apart from it being free to Dock Permit holders (£ 2.50 for all other sea anglers), those taking part can choose their favourite fishing spot anywhere on the river from Otterspool to Seaforth Rocks, on the Liverpool side, or from Bromborough to Vale Park on the Wirral bank.

This is a roving fishing match, so you can even start on Wirral and come to Liverpool if the fishing isn’t so bright, and the top prizes go to the fishermen with the best two species.

Anglers should book-in from 7,45am at the Truck Stop, Church Street, off Derby Road in Bootle, and fishing is from 9am to 1pm.
