Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column www.warrington-anglers.org.uk

22nd December 2000

The large bream are still feeding on the large lake at Sandiway with aspecimen of 9lbs reported this week by an angler fishing for carp. Thiswater holds much larger fish that have been seen in June spawning aroundthe island. Boilie was the successful bait. Fishing on the small lake isalmost impossible due to the high water conditions.

Flooded and muddy banks at Grey Mist Mere are putting off members fromvisiting the fishery despite the prospect of the odd fish still on the cards. A number of upper doubles reported this week.

If you fancy some comfortable fishing over the holiday more new pegshave been built this week on Woodshaw Reservoir. Pole and pinkie for roach, rudd, and even the crucians are still feeding.

Sport on the Trent and Mersey Canal has slowed but if temperaturescontinue to rise there should be a prospect of some reasonable catches. SeanDavison reports a trio of quality perch taken from the ICI works area whichweighed in at 1-7-0, 1-11-0, and a massive 2-8-0, plus some smaller fish. Allfish took lobworm fished down the boat-run.

Roach, gudgeon, and perch offer reasonable action on the MacclesfieldCanal but there have been no further reports of large roach. If you have timeover the holiday period and have not yet had the pleasure of this fishery itcould prove to be a worthwhile trip.

The recent Bridgewater Canal roach stocking exercise did not have theanticipated effect of kick-starting sport. However I expect with the lowwater temperatures we could expect little else. Certainly the fish arethere and in good numbers, despite keeping their mouths shut and not feeding. Pike striking in front of me on Sunday caused the water to erupt on each occasion with hundreds of fish, and I was struggling for a bite, even before the pike decided to dine.

Chris Grehan is organising a match on the Trent & Mersey Canal onSunday, draw 10am at Gadbrooke. Ring Chris to book in on 01925 635373. Also please note our holiday match calendar below.
