Eskimo style hole in the ice tactics were a necessity over the New YearHoliday but catches by those that braved the elements were reasonably good.The match on New Years Day was won with 2-14-0 with several backing weights around 2-8-0. Small roach and skimmers were mainly caught on bread or squat.
Everywhere is now free of ice and sport should improve if the fish in mygarden pond are any guide, they are feeding voraciously.
I have received a rare catch report regarding the River Bollin from IanYorke who legered worm to catch two perch and three trout. Not such a greatcatch but in the conditions more than acceptable.
I realise that there have not been large numbers of anglers on the banksbut I would really appreciate any reports, good, bad, or indifferent.
Ackers Pit has suffered from the usual amounts of rubbish thrown onto theice during the freeze-up. The problem is removing it is not that simple, ifonly this mindless minority would think before they despoil what is a localoasis for wildlife. As regards the fishing prospects if the temperaturescontinue to rise it looks good for the weekend.
Moore Quarry has virtually remained free of ice throughout, but has paid anunacceptable penalty as a consequence from the ravages of up to 35cormorants. With these pests mopping up the smaller fish I have no doubtthat perch and pike will suffer. It is ironic that resident species such asgrebes and kingfishers will suffer likewise. No fishery can sustain thisonslaught and positive action by Government to protect our native fish islong overdue.
