9 January, 2001

Lymm Dam has begun to produce decent catches of roach, bream, perch and pike. Bailiff, Kevin Peers, reports good catches to day ticket anglers, with bream to 7lb and pike to 17lb, producing the most interest.

The Sankey Canal is a little peggy at the moment, with the most consistent stretch remaining the Cyanide stretch, which has produced good sized tench and bream over the last week.

Abbey Lake is another banker water, where anglers are nearly guaranteed good catches of roach. At the moment colour is dropping out fast, and light tackle is of great importance. Caster and bread punch is the bait scoring best at the moment.

Our members tend to stick to member only waters, and these have also improved with New Pool the best option at the moment. Skimmers are, as expected, providing good sport with 6 – 8lb catches expected in a three to four hour session.

Village Pool is firing on all cylinders with all species, including carp, giving better than average action.

On the subject of carp, this species is as obliging as any other on Founders Pool, best reported over the last week or two was a common of 14.5lb.

Specimen roach have also been reported from this water of late, although Kev Peers record of 2lb-12-0 has not been broken yet.

Unfortunately, both Grimsditch and Statham Pools were flooded at the time of writing, making angling on them a little difficult, although not impossible. Both have been fishing very well to squatt and slop methods, with roach and bream reigning on Statham Pool, whilst skimmers and rudd ruled on Grimsditch.

Lymmvale has given up some good fish over the last week. Most notable catch fell to member Kevin Shore who bagged a nice brace of chub, which pulled his scales down to 5lb-13-0 and 6lb-2-0, respectively. This class of fish would be making quite splash in the angling press, if they had been caught elsewhere, whereas on Lymmvale they are only a little above the norm, and not unusual. “What a fishery”.

Work parties commence on Sunday the 21st January, meeting at Whitley Pool Car Park at 9 am, there is a lot of work required at this time of year, and your attendance will help in making a good start on the tasks ahead.
