Horton, part of the RMC complex, has a reputation for being one of the toughest winter carp fisheries in the country.
The venue is not a water for the faint-hearted at this time of year and a glance through the log book in the lodge reveals that there were precious few carp captures over the years during the months of December and January.

Keith James is one of the few remaining members of the original Horton Syndicate and is more aware than most of the difficulties of coldwater carping on Horton. But Keith showed that some good catches are possible with five fish in three sessions.
On his first session he netted two stockie mirrors scaling 19lb and 19lb 8oz. He then returned to the same swim to bag further stockies of 22lb 10oz and 23lb 14oz in his next session. Out of respect for Keith and his going spot the syndicate members left the swim free for him until he could return and his third session in the same swim produced the icing on the cake for Keith in the shape of a superb common of 31lb 8oz – A new personal best.
The common is a known but un-named Horton fish, making 30lb for the first time this winter. Nutrabaits Big Fish Mix produced for Keith and with five carp in three sessions there could be more to come for him from Horton if the weather holds.
