Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column
2nd February 2001
There is still not much to write home about around most of our fisheries,on the stillwaters perhaps it’s a close tie between Ackers Pit and WoodshawReservoir where catches of roach and perch in the case of the latter areproviding some sport to members. Maggot and pinkie best baits.
The Bridgewater Canal is producing mainly small fish, roach, perch, lots ofsmall gudgeon and a few bream. The perch as you would expect are full ofspawn with fish to 3lbs from the Agden area. Best baits are bread punch, caster, with squats probably best overall. Pickerings Bridge is theexception to the rule with reports of quality roach catches to pole andcaster. Jim Buck fished injected sardine at Walton where he had three pikeof 14-8-0. 11-0-0, and 7-0-0.
The Ribble is definitely improving according to reports with chub to 6lbsplus and barbel to 10lbs from Hurst Green area. The bottom end of outstretch is the most productive. Some decent grayling to 2-12-0 are beingcaught from Balderstone.
Small rivers like the Alyn and the Gowy are not really on form with reportsthat the former is very muddy along its banks. Worthenbury Brook is in asimilar state where you need a four-wheel drive to have any chance ofapproaching either this fishery or the Dee.
All stillwaters and canals with the exception of Ackers Pit, Cicily MillPool, and Rixton Claypits will remain open throughout the year. The namedthree will close on the last day of February and reopen on 1st May asnormal.
