Liverpool-based Grove Park Angling Club had a trophy match on the Rufford Canal at Tarleton where a 3lb bream boosted Neil Lloyd’s small fish catch to 7lb 4oz.

Neil, who lives in Bootle, pole fished at five and 10 metres while feeding neat joker and using bloodworm on the hook, taking tiny roach, skimmers and the big bream in the final hour.

Dave Hunter was second with 3lb 1oz followed by Peter Jones on 1lb 10oz.

A quick thaw meant that Willow Pool at Brookside Fishery was fishable – but didn’t seem to appreciate the change and catches were poor.

Dave Wilkie (Harry’s Tackle) won with 10lb 4oz from peg five where he pole fished at 12 metres with maggot to catch small carp up to 12 ounces.

It was even more difficult in the Prescot Angling Centre Open on Halsnead Park Lake.

Skelmersdale matchman Steve Rogers came first with 3lb 10oz but 3lb of that was a single bream he caught on double pinkie while using a groundbait feeder from peg 12 which also produced a handful of tiny roach.
