Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

9th March 2001

With all waters iced over last weekend only the keenest of anglers were onthe banks, although conditions have since improved. On the BridgewaterCanal sport mainly revolved around gudgeon and small roach to bread punch or pinkie.

Grey Mist produced a few jack pike and the smallest carp caught for sometime, a fish of 3lbs. I hope that this is a product of resident fish and has not been introduced. The risks involved with illegal introductions are enormous; a complete fishery can be totally wiped out.

Bailiff, John Evans who many of you will know as a mine of information onthe River Severn gave me a late report of a fantastic barbel from our LotonPark fishery. The fish took lobworm and weighed in a 14.5lbs. I have heardof a member of fish at 12lbs but this is the best I have heard of from anyof our fisheries. I’m certain this capture will ensure the fishery receivesmore attention this next season.

The River Mersey shuts next week for the 90 day ‘close season’ but is stillproducing a few roach and gudgeon. A good sign of improving water qualityis that a member caught a small brown trout on Saturday. Regulars tell me that the best areas for a chance of a few fish are Paddington Bank or Howleysuspension bridge. Best method is a small groundbait feeder and maggot.

This past week has shown that anglers care as members have obeyed closure notices on sections of towpath and other public rights of way due to the foot and mouth epidemic. Sadly this is not universal and I was dismayed at the numbers of dog walkers and cyclists who blatantly climbed over barriertape and irresponsibly ignored official warning notices. Perhaps a few£ 5000 maximum fines in the press would make these people see the error of their ways.

Just a reminder of fisheries open to date, they are, Grey Mist, Ackers Pit,Moore Quarry, Woodshaw Reservoir, River Mersey downstream of Paddington Bank and Mersey Walk, and Appleton Reservoir. Please note all matches have been cancelled.
