Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

PAC member, Geoff Gauton, reckons that the Bridgewater Canal iswithout doubt the best specimen pike fishery in the Northwest. Theproof of the pudding is a string of double figure fish over recentweeks. On Tuesday his legered oil injected sardine accounted for acracking brace weighing in at 25-12-0 and 19-0-0 from the Lumb Brookarea. Both came from a featureless peg, one caught on the far shelfand the other in the towpath margins.
The boat traffic will increase over the Easter weekend as BWB havenow opened their canal network to craft. Brian Barber had a mixed netat Cliffe Lane and caught steady all day. Several lower double carpfrom Grappenhall.
After a short day session on Grey Mist Mere Ian Davidson was wellsatisfied with his catch of a 13-0-0 common and a 15-0-0 mirror. Ashe was leaving his swim a youngster took over the peg and asked Ianto cast out for him. Within minutes an 11lbs mirror took the boilie.Jes Steel had the best catch of the week with mirror carp of 23-8-0,21-0-0, and 11-0-0.
Members are catching tench at Rixton Claypits and there are plentyof fish moving in the margins. It rained all day during MartinStuart’s visit to Rixton but he was still singing the praises of thefishery after netting a 20-0-0 mirror taken on a Peach Melba boilie.Woodshaw Reservoir is producing small roach and perch with the oddcrucian starting to show as the weather improves.
A member fishing on Sandiway small lake on Wednesday morningincluded three specimen rudd in his catch. They were all like peas ina pod at approximately 2lbs plus apiece and took float -fished cornfrom one of the few dry swims near the car park. I would advisemembers who visit this fishery to take a platform and waders. I haveno reports on the large lake.
The weather has put fish down at Appleton Reservoir but sport isstill reasonable despite the high water levels. Cheshire branch ofthe Salmon & Trout Association are running a junior beginners dayat Morton Heath Trout Pools. There are 20 places available at £6per child, all tackle provided, book in with Dave Taylor on 01260224231.
