Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

4th May 2001

Cicily Mill Pool opened on Tuesday after some feverish activity byour small band of working party volunteers who as I write are stillbusy rebuilding walkways and pegs. The fishing as ever was magic withanglers reporting good catches of roach, tench, and bream. Best baitsare maggot, bread, meat, and corn. One sad individual on opening day, obviously so excited by his day’s sport that he forgot to take hisplastic bags and empty groundbait packets home, leaving them on anewly constructed peg. If he would come forward to be identified wewould like to return his rubbish, point out the error of his ways, and inform his that he is no longer a member of WarringtonAnglers.

The large lake at Sandiway is producing lots of decent tench to7lbs and bream to 9lbs, most being taken on boilies by anglersfishing for carp. High water levels make access to the small lakedifficult, but there are still pegs available on dry land. If youhave a platform it opens up most of the swims. Ian Graham reportsbagging up on roach and rudd on red maggot, his session ended when heran out of bait. Method was pole and loose fed maggot.

The Wide Hole at Poynton is worth a visit for skimmers and breamto 3lbs. Members inform me that carp are also there in number, possibly ready to spawn. This fishery provides a safe haven andexcellent spawning area for fish, being directly off the MacclesfieldCanal. Members are reminded that they are not currently allowed topark in the adjacent field.

Some better tench have been showing this past week at RixtonClaypits with good numbers of fish in the 3.5 to 5lbs bracket beingtaken on boilies or sweetcorn. Roach and perch also providing goodsport to maggot.

The carp have switched on at Grey Mist with lots of upper doublesbeing caught; best fish reported was a mirror of 24lbs. Richard Munnshad a mirror of 21lbs. Tench to 6-8-0 being taken on the usualvariety of boilies.

Sport on the Bridgewater Canal has improved, mainly small roach, gudgeon, and skimmers. A few carp are featuring in matches. The canalis now open the whole length, from Preston Book Tunnel to the A56Bridge at Broadheath.
