The National Federation of Anglers held their annual conferencelast Saturday and Sunday at Nottingham. These are usually mundaneaffairs, but this year there was a buzz due to a proposal whichendeavoured to bring the Federation into the 21st century, thankfully the proposal breezed the two thirds majority it requiredto succeed.
The NFA is the governing body for all fresh water fishing in thiscountry, and as such is the organisation which represents our sportat all levels. As the body that represents us all involved in thelargest participant sport in the country, they should have anextremely powerful political voice. Unfortunately this has not beenthe case and other organisations, representing much smaller minoritysports, have been more successful in gaining recognition for theiractivities and have therefore had more influence resulting in higherlevels of grants etc.
However, it is hoped that the changes made at this yearsconference will address the problems that face our Federation, it isnow their duty to initiate the required changes, following the timescales predetermined by the successful proposal.
The basis of the proposal is to slim down the lumberingmechanisms, with numerous decision making Committees, andstreamlining the organisation by recruiting a Membership ServicesOfficer. This officer will be charged with making the requiredchanges, and raising the profile and strength of the organisation inorder for it to fight the ‘anglers corner’ from a position of powerin this time when angling is under threat from the anti-anglingorganisations.
Now to matters relating to fishing. Tench are now making theirpresence felt, especially in Whitley Pool and the Sankey Canal. Thisspecies heralds to anglers that spring has arrived, in the same wayas the arrival of swallows and tree blossom. During the warmermonths they are avid feeders, taking all baits offered, although theyare known to have a particular liking for sweetcorn and luncheonmeat.
All waters have improved, with some exceptional catches made onGrimsditch Mill Pool, Longbarn Pool and the Sankey Canal. Bailiff,Dave Sheridan reports significant carp catches from Longbarn Pool, with the best catches made from the bank farthest away from BirchwoodWay. On the canal, bailiff Beryl Trickett reports that roach, rudd, bream and perch are adding to the tench action to provide goodcatches, with pike anglers also enjoying good sport.
New Pool, Village Pool, Statham Pool and Founders Pool are allrewarding those who have earned their right to fish them, byacquiring their work party gold overstamp. Recently opened FoundersPool, has lived up to its good reputation by providing excellentfishing with carp and roach landed of specimen proportions.
Crucians, perch, rudd and bream are the other species being landedin numbers.
Members are reminded that when fishing Founders Pool, they mustkeep to the pegs between the notices.
Since last week there have been no new developments relating tothe foot and mouth restrictions, however the situation is beingmonitored all the time with a view to open up waters as soon aspossible.
Please note that due to the foot and mouth problem, all Clubmatches scheduled on ‘member only’ waters have been redirected to dayticket waters, this to minimise inconvenience to our members.
I have been asked to inform members that the work party scheduledfor the 10th June on the River Severn, has been reallocated. Thiswork party will take place on the same date, although it will nowmeet on Whitley Pool car park at 9 am. This work party will offermembers an opportunity to earn their gold overstamp for 2002, in onesix hour session.
I can be contacted on 411774.
