Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column www.warrington-anglers.org.uk

Sport on the Trent & Mersey Canal is patchy but Whatcroft is worth a visitwhere members are catching small roach, skimmers, and a few chub to justover a pound. Best baits are bread punch, maggot, or caster.

The Bridgewater Canal is only generally producing small roach, perch, andskimmers, but better quality roach to punched bread from Pickerings Bridge.Water clarity at Agden is very clear with members improving their catchrate when a boat has stirred the silt. Pike anglers not seeing much action butseveral reports from pleasure anglers of seeing ‘pike like crocodiles’ intheir swims.

Chub in the 2 to 4lbs size range are being caught on the Ribble from thelower end of our length. Also welcome reports of dace to 4ozs appearing incatches lower down the river. Certainly our stretch of river pre-cormorantdays always held a good head of quality dace, let’s hope they are making awelcome comeback.

I mentioned a ‘rare’ report from the River Bollin last week and low andbehold I have received another this week, it’s almost like winning theLottery. John Baines had a four-hour session on Tuesday and was rewardedwith an all trout catch of twelve rainbows averaging two pounds. The fishall took legered worm and John reckons the best was just over 3lbs. Forthe record all fish were returned.

Many thanks on behalf of anglers to the Environment Agency who have stocked six thousand plus small roach plus a few chub in the Mersey at Paddington Lock. This along with current research projects on this river are just some of the many services and benefits that the EA provide from your licence fees.

The River Mersey has understandably been carrying some extra water butregular Brian Stoll had a few small roach and gudgeon. A trout of 1-8-0 hasalso been caught. Reports please.

We had our working party volunteers at Ackers Pit on Monday removing anassortment of rubbish, mainly tree branches, beer cans, and even the AckersRoad Lane road sign. We removed two truckloads of rubbish and debris. Iwould welcome any form reports on the fishery. If you think you can helpwith any of the ongoing development and maintenance work on our fisheriesplease give me a ring.
