Well known barbel anglers Tony Miles and Trefor West have been fishing together for many years, long before they became household names in the specialist angling world. For years they used baits and flavours marketed by various companies until they decided that they knew as much, if not more, than most, about the baits and flavours that barbel, and chub, preferred. So they got their heads together and came up with a range of base mixes and flavours specially designed to attract barbel and chub, and then persuaded Rod Hutchinson to manufacture them as a commercial venture.
The base mixes come in six flavours with such exotic names as Grubby Chubby and Marine Harvest. They are packed in 500 gram bags and 10kg tubs. Powder based they mix with either water for a paste bait or with eggs if you wish to make boilies.
Then there are dusting powders, a range of four: Spice Mania, Fish Mania, Meat Mania and Fruit Mania. Whatever the fish in your water prefer there is a basic flavour here that will appeal to them. Dusting powders come in plastic jars and are added to moist baits such as luncheon meat a few hours before use. I’ve found that an overnight soak is better, or to put the dusted baits in a plastic bag and then freeze them. Then thaw them out an hour or so before use. The freezing process draws the flavour into the bait much better. Dusting powders can be used on any bait, including maggots.
Finally, there are the Concentrated Liquid Flavours, with yummy names like Sausage Sizzle, Opti Spice, Ocean Pride and Mega Berry. Liquid flavours are used to enhance the attraction of the base mixes, or simply to spice up any bait from its plain old natural flavour.
I’ve used all three products for some time now, and I feel very sure that they have made a big difference on some days when other anglers were struggling with either plain baits, or baits flavoured with something else.
The products are available from most leading tackle shops.
