Court decision will help protect precious rivers
The Angling Trust, Fish Legal and WWF-UK have secured a major step forward for the protection of England’s most important rivers and wetlands from agricultural pollution.
At a Judicial Review in the High Court, the three organisations claimed ministerial involvement had stifled action to address harmful pollution from farms.
Meanwhile, Defra’s proposals to control agricultural pollution have been slammed by the Angling Trust’s Head of Freshwater Mark Owen for not going far enough to tackle the problem.
“The rules duplicate many existing regulations and even if they were enforced they would only lead to a decrease in phosphate pollution of 2.4% when the government’s own figures show a need to reduce it by 48%,” said Mark.
New draft measures to halt decline in salmon stocks
A summit has been held at Defra to discuss how to address failing stocks of Atlantic salmon in England after 2014’s catches were the lowest on record.
The Angling Trust & Fish Legal, who are leading a Save Our Salmon campaign, along with other concerned organisations proposed a number of immediate actions including an end to all netting of salmon.
Action needed to stop waste site falling into the sea
The Angling Trust and Marine Conservation Society have written to two councils in Devon urging them to take action to stop a landfill site at the mouth of the Taw and Torridge estuary being washed into the sea.
Household waste has been washed into the sea with every storm over the past five years, leading to pollution fears which could threaten stocks of salmon, sea trout and bass.
Court fight to save rare endangered fish at Llyn Padarn
The latest round of litigation to save the endangered Arctic char at Llyn Padarn in North Wales has taken place at Caernarfon court centre against Natural Resources Wales, Dwr Cymru / Welsh Water, and the Welsh Ministers.
Fish Legal is seeking to establish that the regulator has taken an unlawfully narrow view of what constitutes environmental damage to the char and its protected habitat.
The Information Commissioner has rejected a water company’s argument over abstracted and contained water which could have limited the amount of information they are under a legal duty to disclose to the public.
Would you know what to do if you found dead or dying fish on your waters?
In the first instance, the relevant statutory body needs to be contacted but then there are some important steps to take to enable Fish Legal to act effectively on behalf of its members.
