THE ANDY NELLIST SAFETY LINK

When I fished the Ribble during the fish-in in December 2004 it occurred to me that with the amount of snags you needed to be fishing running rigs but also needed the feeder/lead to break free without breaking your line if it became snagged.

The way to do that would be to attach the feader/lead using the safety link I use when fishing a fixed paternoster above the lead.

The sliding link is made by tying a small length of 14lb Drennan powergum to a swivel. The feeder/lead is threaded onto this powergum followed by a rubber bead and a couple of Drennan medium silicon float stops.

Under a pressure of 1.5 lb the float stops will slide off the power gum and release the feeder/lead. To enable you to cast the lead or feeder it is supported during the cast by a casting hook which is also attached to the opposite eye of the swivel as the one to which the powergum is tied to. I fashion these out of Drennan links using a pair of pliers.

The swivel is threaded onto the mainline via the eye to which the powergum is attached.

About the Rigs Page

The Rigs Page is a library of features to illustrate all those rigs that will be useful to both beginners and experienced anglers.

The rigs can be extremely simple and well known, or very complicated and little known, it doesn’t matter providing they make some kind of sense and have a really practical application.

It could be a standard running leger rig that a beginner will appreciate seeing in pictures, or a very complicated anti-eject carp rig that the experienced carp angler would like to see.

If you wish to contribute a rig to this section please remember that the emphasis is on illustration rather than words. Good line drawings are fine in the absence of photographs. Please send to graham@fishingmagic.com
