As fair-weather anglers get their tackle out for a summer of riverbank serenity, Churchill insurance has declared that fishing is the most hazardous pastime that it covers. With millions of anglers carrying an average of £ 1500 worth of tackle, the potential for loss, damage and theft is huge.
“At Churchill, fishing results in far more claims than any other sport or pastime. There are around two to three million anglers out this year, carrying very expensive equipment. This means a massive potential for financial loss.” said Churchill spokesman, Greg Dawson.
Churchill believes that only half of all people that fish make sure that all of their equipment is covered by insurance. Churchill covers fishing tackle for customers through its personal possessions, home contents insurance but states that they should be informed if the equipment is of high value. Churchill processes hundreds of claims each year for unfortunate fishing enthusiasts and has listed the top three perils:-
Snapped or damaged rods and poles whilst casting
Tackle stolen or lost on the riverbank
Tackle stolen as result of a burglary
Following fishing, golfers and tennis aces also rack up a significant number of claims. Broken rackets, twisted clubs and missing golf bags are all common complaints.
To provide expert advice and support on its fishing claims, Churchill uses specialists, Jack Frost Tackle Ltd. The company categorises fishing fanatics into three groups for marketing and service support.
Mr Average – has tackle worth up to £ 1000 and takes his son or daughter to the local fishery when the sun shines.
Clubman – fishes at a local angling club, ventures out once a week with up to a £ 2,000 worth of equipment.
Serious Clubman – A keen competitor in an angling league – can spend up to £ 6,000 on a fishing pole and tackle.
Steve Mugridge from Jack Frost said, “Angling is growing very rapidly following wider TV coverage so sales of equipment are rocketing. As you can see whether you fish for fun or compete for prizes, your tools of the trade are likely to really set you back if you need to replace.”
