Mullock Madeley auctioneers took a top price of £ 4,400 on an anglers’ fly reservoir, now destined for a private collection in the United States, following the sale on Friday & Saturday, March 12/13 at Ludlow Race Course, Shropshire. Exports and strong trade were seen throughout the two-day sale of antique and modern fishing tackle and related items. Auctioneers Mullock Madeley reported buyers from 15 countries on their books, all of whom were in buying mood. Says senior partner, John Mullock: “We had a tremendous two days. The saleroom was packed with 200 registered buyers, plus there were a further 100 commission bidders and an amazing number of telephone bids. John comments, “the middle market proved particularly strong. We witnessed a significant strengthening of items in the £ 200 to £ 400 bracket and most notably the rod market. In the past rods have not been perceived as ‘great collectibles’, but that appears to be changing with an influx of international buyers from countries including Italy, Japan and Holland.” Not all items were seized for overseas destinations, a highly collectible ‘banjo oil bottle’ realised £ 1,200 to a UK collector. A rare threadline reel hauled in more than double its guide price, the gavel dropping at £ 840. Among the fish an extremely rare Hardy Preserved Sea Trout expected to sell for £ 2,000 achieved double at £ 4,000. Excitement continued in the saleroom when a second trout, expected to make £ 300 to £ 500, hooked four dealers to take it up to £ 2,100. A carved wooden salmon also leapt its guide price of £ 1,700 to take £ 2,800. |
