Brighouse Angling Association (BAA) is running a free taster day on Tuesday, 21st August for 8-16 year olds interested in finding out about coarse fishing on the Calder & Hebble Navigation at Brookfoot Lock, with support from British Waterways, the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council’s Activity & Community Development Team.
Two coaches from the National Fishing Association, Dennis Dolan, who is head coach for the North East Region and Harry Lodge from Wakefield, will be joining members of the BAA and staff from British Waterways and the Environment Agency to provide expert instruction and equipment on the day which runs from 10-4pm. Calderdale Council’s Activity & Community Development Team are promoting it as part of their ‘Do Something’ programme for children this summer which is being co-ordinated by Colin Crowther, Calderdale’s Sports Development Officer. British Waterways will also be providing some angling-connected ‘goody bags’ for the budding anglers to take home with them. Clive Milsom, Honorary Secretary for BAA said: “We are really looking forward to holding this taster day and to introducing some local youngsters to the pleasures of angling in their local waterway during the summer holidays. We are grateful for the support from both the Environment Agency and British Waterways and hope that this is the start of a regular event.” Rob Broadbent, British Waterways Angling Co-ordinator, Yorkshire, said: “We are pleased to work with Brighouse Angling Association in encouraging young people to be aware of, and enjoy their local waterway.” Places are limited and need to be reserved by contacting contact Clive on 01274 875968.
